Twitch Banned Words List: Essential Terms to Add to AutoMod

A banned word list is your chat’s simplest way
to stay protected from making things weird.

Regardless of whether you’re starting out or have been streaming for a while, having banned terms is essential to streaming and gives you a bit of peace of mind.

AutoMod on Twitch does cover a lot of risky messages from chat, so you can review a message before letting others bear witness to whatever someone has sent. Moderators can approve or deny these messages.

Banned Phrases

Essential Anti-Bot Phrases:

Bͦest vie̟wers
nezhna
cheap viewers
Che̴ap viewers
Bestͮ vie͐wers ̷on
Best vie̮wers
Ch̍eap Viewers

How to Add Banned Words

Go to your Twitch dashboard and go to your moderation settings

Under “AutoMod & Message Filtering”, click “View Advanced Settings” and scroll to the bottom of that section where it says “Blocked Terms and Phrases”.

Here, you can add phrases, and you can set the privacy on these blocked terms, which is notable if you don’t want your mods to see some of the blocked terms. If you’re putting any personal information in your blocked terms, make sure to set it to private so your mods can’t see it.

My AutoMod Settings

I mentioned AutoMod earlier, and so I’ll skim through some of the settings I have set.

I have noticed that AutoMod can sometimes be overly sensitive. Here are my settings; I recommend choosing the ones that best suit you and your community. If your community often makes certain jokes or has a unique sense of humour that AutoMod tends to flag, it’s a good idea to adjust your settings accordingly.

Harassment

  • Aggression: Some filtering
  • Bullying: Less filtering
  • Sexual Harassment: No filtering

Discrimination and Slurs

  • Disability: Some filtering
  • Sexuality, sex or gender: Some filtering
  • Misogyny: Some filtering
  • Race, ethnicity, or religion: Some filtering

Sexual Content

  • Sex-based terms: No filtering

Profanity

  • Swearing: No filtering

These settings seem to be good enough for my community, but again, do what makes you comfortable! At the end of the day, your stream and the people who hang out in your stream should be people you enjoy spending time with.
